The first Dodge Viper GTS-R, chassis #P1, was unvelied at Laguna Seca Raceway in August 1995 after five months of development. Named the "Mule", this car was a Chrysler engineering prototype and used for numerous tests. There is a version that the car raced in 1996 Daytona 24h as #97 by Canaska-Southwind but this info still needs of investigation. As of 2018, the #P1 was located in the Walter P. Chrysler Museum and looks like #97 in a white livery with blue stripes and Exxon inscription on the windshield.

Exterior color of the '96 GTS was limited to Viper Blue. However, of the total 1166 coupes built 3 cars were actually white. All were equipped with white painted wheels.

• The only model year when stripes on the Viper GTS would run through the rear license plate area.

For the first year of production the second generation Dodge Viper RT/10 was available in three different exterior design themes: red with silver or yellow (optional) wheels, black with silver stripes and silver wheels, white with blue stripes and white wheels. A total of 721 cars were produced in 1996MY (686 units for U.S. market, 30 units for Canadian market and 5 units for other markets). This was the lowest number since 1992, when just 285 cars were built.
